Sqn Ldr Sam Martin received an Individual Sports Grant earlier this year which has helped fund training for him and his horse Cruise, to represent the RAF team at Inter-Service level.
“I joined the RAF as a pilot in 1992 and have been riding for the RAF team since 2003. I have ridden in Inter-Service competitions at Royal Windsor Horse Show and the London International Horse Show every year on a number of different horses. I have been competing on my current horse, Cruise, since 2014. I came second in the Services Jumping Championship at the London International Horse Show in Dec 2017. My goal is to return to the show and try to go one better and win it!
The sports grant that the RAF Central Fund kindly awarded me has allowed me to fund additional show jumping training for me and my horse, as well as helping with the cost of a specialist farrier and equine physiotherapist to improve Cruise’s biomechanics. Both these factors are reflected in an improvement in our results in inter-service competition. Here is a photo of us competing at the Military Team Jumping competition at Royal Windsor Horse Show a couple of weekends ago.”
My goal is to return to the show and try to go one better and win it!
